26 people were killed and over 20 injured in the attack on the Baisaran Valley in India-administered Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, 2025. The attack , the deadliest of its kind in india since the 2008 mumbai attacks , targeted male non-muslim tourists , and was reportedly aimed at resisting alleged demographic changes in the Kashmir valley. The resistance front , an offshoot of the Pakistan – based , UN – classified terroist group lakshar -e- taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.

A recognized terrorist organization in India, the Resistance Front (TRF) is a militant group actively involved in the insurgency in Jammu and Kashmir. The gang is accountable for numerous attacks on Indian security forces, including police officers, as well as attacks on members of religious minority groups, including Kashmiri Hindus, government workers, laborers, and businesspeople.

The Indian government has started that the organisation was founded by and is an off shoot of laksha-e-taiba , a UN-designated terroist group. Formed using cardes of milliant group lashkar -e-taiba and hizbul mujahideen in the aftermath of the 2019 aborgation of the special status of jammu and Kashmir ,TRF uses non – religious nomenclature and symbolism to project a secular image, but has carried out targeted killings of locals from hindu miniority communities.

The group maintains a significant social media presence , some of which Indian media traces to Pakistan.

ATTACK:

Five thousand people entered the Baisaran Valley Meadow on April 22, 2025. The Baisaran Valley Meadow is roughly 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) from the Pahalgam town in the Anantag area. The region is only reachable on foot or by horseback, and it is surrounded on all sides by thick pine trees. There was little protection in the area. The assailants donned military-style clothes and wielded AK-47s and M4 carbines.

Before shooting the victims, the attackers reportedly requested their names and religions. According to several of the tourists, the militants separated them based on their religion by asking them to recite the Islamic verse of Kalima. Before being shot at close range, men were had to take off their pants to check for circumcision. The video footage from the site showed images of panoi with dead scattered across the ground and injured victims begging for assistance.

INSURGENCY:

While engaging in a gunfight with terrorists in the Basantgrah neighborhood of Udhampur, one Indian soldier was killed and two others were injured.

INVESTIGATIONS:

After visiting the scene on April 23, the national investigative agency opened a probe into the attack. The Jammu and Kashmir police published sketches of three militants they believe were involved in the attack based on eyewitness accounts.

The police stated that all of them were linked to lakshkar – e – taiba and at least two are foreigners . The suspects, who went by the code names Moosa, Yuns, and Abu Talha, respectively, were identified as Asif Fauji, Suleman Shah, and Abu Talha. They had all been linked to earlier incidents in the Pouch region that involved militancy.
